Okay, so we've now been in Baltimore for almost 2 weeks, so I thought I better share the wonderful adventure is was to get here...are you ready? Because I wasn't. I had to wait this long to blog about it, so I could find the humor in our not so humorous moving escapades. Now it's funny to me, so here it goes. It's kind of long, so if you're not a "reader" skip down to the paragraph that starts with "Now for a little bit of happiness"."
Let's start with the fact that I worked up until the day that we left...as in drove out of Logan. I didn't work a full day, actually only a couple of hours, which is how it was my whole last week, but it was still a bit stressful. Next, we signed a contract on our apartment through the end of April, so we got to write a check to the landlord the day we left for us to not be living there for a month! Awesome. Then, when I called the landlord to do a walk through he didn't answer and didn't return the phone call so we couldn't check out properly and had to recruit Jenny to tie up our loose ends for us. Finally, on our last trip to the storage unit, we couldn't find the key. No problem, we made a spare and gave it to Jenny, who will be sharing some of our storage space. She ran it over to us and...the key didn't work...nice. Go Home Depot! So Ben spent the next 2-3 hours calling a locksmith, waiting for him to pick the lock, going back to Home Depot to get a new lock (for free, yes) that came with 2 keys so we didn't have to rely on their handy work again. Jenny was sweet enough to go back to the apartment with me and keep the packing nightmare going.
We finally cleared out of there (well, almost). We left a small mess for Jenny to take care of (thanks again!) and then we were on our way, in 2 cars stuffed to the rafters, to Ogden where we spent the night. Next day (Saturday): get up, repack the cars, go to breakfast with the Clarks (no pictures sorry, I was a bit frazzled by this point), and then on to West Jordan to drop off one of our cars. One of the salesmen going to the same area agreed to drive one of our cars out meaning Ben and I got to ride in one car together...finally, some good news! Then, it was on to Roosevelt! Some of my family is out there so we went that way for a baby blessing (again, no photos) before our journey out of the state."
Okay, so we get to our motel and I am MORE than ready to take a nice hot shower...except, I forgot my bag with ALL of my hair products/implements, makeup, shower stuff, etc. in Ogden! We were debating on going back (3 hour drive) and then remembered we were meeting up in Cheyenne, WY the next night with a technician who was still in Logan. He agreed to stop in Ogden for my "girl bag" so I was only one night without it, which is still too much, but better than the alternative. So, it all finally worked out and we got here safe and sound."
Now for a little bit of happiness...I think dogs have an amazing 6th sense. Ever since we began packing (about 3 weeks before we left), Buddy was acting differently. He was a lot more attached to us than he usually is and was being on his very best behavior. My theory: he knew we were leaving and didn't want to be left behind. Whenever we would come back after leaving him home, he would be shaking and staring at the door. When we started packing up our room, he disappeared for a while and then we heard whining coming from under our bed. When I looked under there, sure he was trapped or caught, he was just laying down whining. We felt so horribly, but how do you tell a dog not to worry and that they get to come too? He usually sleeps a lot, but whenever we were packing/moving things, he would stay awake and just watch. Apparently it got to the point where he was just too tired and this is where we found him.
I called his name to try and get a good picture and he lifted his head, but just couldn't keep his eyes open. He knew that if he was on the duffle bag, there's no way we could leave without him knowing it.
Everyone kept asking me how Buddy was going to do on the 31 hour drive out here and here is the answer...

He slept almost the whole way! What a GREAT road-tripper!

You guys inspired me to get everything packed up sooner, rather than later! :) Problem: Now I still have 3 weeks, and have already taken pretty much everything home!...I'm still working on the packing lighter thing, not going so well. Glad you got there safe and sound, despite the stress beforehand! Buddy's such a trooper, I miss him! See ya out east in NINETEEN days!!!
PS: the next time you have someone "tie up your lose ends" could ya clean your own light fixtures!? HAHA, j/k. Good thing I owe you like 4 months worth of food and rent, or I might have been a little mad, but it was pretty funny actually. :)
I agree that dogs have a 6th sense about things like that. Poor little Maddie is still actually traumatized about our move and getting the new puppy over a month ago! I also have a comment about getting keys made at Home Depot. We tried to have them make a spare key for us 4 (yes 4) times, and every one of them did not work. I no longer trust Home Depot (well, the key thing, and their employees in the stores are lame), which is why I shop at Lowe's.
I hate moving!!! It sounds like it was quite the process for you guys.. At least you are finally out there now with it all behind you! Hope you guys like it out there, and post some pics of Baltimore for us to see!
what a stressful few days! glad you guys made it safe!!
this story made me cry! that is so cute about buddy, and i totally agree that dogs have a sixth sense! oh also, lance and i had the same problem with the home depot keys - we took a key to get copied and neither of the copies work! lame. well i am glad that you guys made it safe and sound! and i am glad (for buddy's sake) that you took him with you!
